Professor Vilmos Misangyi is an Associate Professor in the Management and Organization Department in the Smeal College of Business at The Pennsylvania State University. His research is concerned with the means by which organizations and their top managers influence and are influenced by their external environments. His research has been published or is forthcoming in the Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Research Methods, and the Leadership Quarterly. Dr. Misangyi serves on the Editorial Review Boards of the Academy of Management Review and the Academy of Management Journal and as an ad hoc reviewer for several journals including the Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Business Ethics Quarterly. The findings of his research have been reported on in the business press including in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Business Week, the Denver Post, the NewsJournal (Wilmington, DE), and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He has received awards for his scholarship (Best Paper Award of 2008, International Association of Business and Society; Best Paper Award of 2004, Organization and Management Theory Division, Academy of Management), teaching (Calvin A. VanderWerf Teaching Award, 2000-2001, University of Florida), and reviewing (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty (ABCD) Award for Reviewing, 2005; Organization and Management Theory Division, Academy of Management).
Prior to joining Smeal, Dr. Misangyi was an Assistant Professor in the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics at the University of Delaware from 2002-2008. He holds a PhD in Management from the University of Florida (2002) and a bachelors degree in Financial Administration from Michigan State University (1987). He also completed all of the core courses of the evening MBA program at the University of Connecticut (West Hartford). Before starting his academic career, he worked for several years in various financial management positions (i.e., cost accounting manager; director of financial planning and budgeting) for the Continental Baking Company (Wonder Bread/Hostess Cake) and the Carvel Corporation.
Professor Misangyi's work examines or has examined how CEO charisma and charismatic language contributes to organizational effectiveness, including through its influence upon external stakeholders, and the interplay between organizations and industry and institutional environments in constituting managerial discretion, collective corruption, and corporate governance. His interests also include research methodologies and he has work that promotes the understanding of multilevel statistical techniques as well as set-theoretic methodologies.
