Sophia Houghton is a PhD student in Accounting. She entered the program in 2013 and is expected to graduate in 2018. Sophia is the recipient of the W. Edward and Kay M. Hastings Graduate Scholarship and has served as a teaching assistant for Financial and Managerial Accounting for Decision Making and an instructor for Financial and Managerial Accounting for Decision Making and Intermediate Financial Accounting I. In addition, Sophia serves as a member of Smeal's Honor and Intergrity Board, acts as co-chair of the Honor and Integrity Board's Student Task Force and is the President of the Smeal PhD Association. Her goal in these programs is to provide programming aimed at improving the quality of the PhD program and foster interdepartmental discussion.
Sophia received her Bachelors of Science in Accounting and Masters of Accountancy degrees in 2010 from the Weatherhead School of Business at Case Western Reserve University. While there, she focused on healthcare, non-profit and pension accounting. After school Sophia worked at El Paso Oil and Gas as a pension accountant and KMG Chemicals as the lead financial accountant.
Outside of research, Sophia enjoys knitting, cooking and indoor rowing.
Sophia's research interests lie primarily in the areas of disclosure, learning and analysts' information processing abilities. Her first year summer research paper was entitled "Shaping Liquidity or Managing Liquidity: A Review and Extension of “Shaping Liquidity: On the Causal Effects of Voluntary Disclosure” by Balakrishnan, Billings, Kelly and Ljungqvist (2013)" and explored the possibility that insiders are motivated to increase their firm's liquidity in order to generate opportunities to profitably trade.
