Introduction

Professor James McKeown is currently Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal Chaired Professor of Accounting. Previously at Penn State he held the title of Distinguished Professor (1989-92) and the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting (1992-99). Before coming to Penn State, he taught at the University of Illinois where he held the Weldon Powell Professorship and the A.C. Littleton Professorship, and received the Undergraduate Instructional Award, the Weldon Powell Achievement Award, and the Fred Roedgers Research Award. He is the recipient of the American Accounting Association 2003 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award and the Penn State 1998 Graduate Faculty Teaching Award.

Professor McKeown is a member of the American Accounting Association (Auditing, Financial Accounting and Tax Sections), the Decision Sciences Institute, and the Institute of Management Accountants. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Quantitative Finance and Accounting(1989-present) and previously for The Accounting Review(1989-93). He also serves as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance (1994-present) and as an ad hoc reviewer for various academic journals. Professor McKeown was a research consultant to the Objectives Study Group of the AICPA, performed research under contract to the Financial Accounting Standards Board and KPMG Research Opportunities in Auditing research grants. He directed the development and implementation of a four-course management information systems concentration for accounting and business administration, and PLATO-IV instructional materials for the entire elementary accounting sequence.
